The Most Efficient Way to Heat Your Pool in Southwest Florida

Posted by Jason Szumlanski On March 4, 2013

I always get a kick out of that local TV commercial for budget priced electric heat pumps for pools. The narrator screams, “The Most Efficient Way to Heat Your Pool in Southwest Florida!” Does anyone believe him?

Surprise, surprise… The cheapest heat pumps are definitely NOT the most efficient heat pumps, and heat pumps are NOT the most efficient way to heat your pool in Southwest Florida.

When shopping for a heat pump, the key factors are the coefficient of performance (COP), expected life (look for a titanium heat exchanger), price, and warranty. You get what you pay for, as the saying goes. But the fact remains – electric heat pumps need electricity, and a lot of it, to heat water. Think about your air conditioner working in reverse, except working on water instead of air. Heat pumps are advisable under some circumstances, but are not even close when looking at energy efficiency.

Pool heating efficiency generally refers to the amount of energy needed to heat the pool, and by extension, how much it costs to heat the pool. Electric heat pumps have an advantage over gas heaters with today’s gas and electricity rates in Southwest Florida. However, it’s not even close to the real Most Efficient Way to Heat Your Pool in Southwest Florida, which is Solar Pool Heating.

After the initial cost of purchasing the system, Solar Pool Heaters operate at NO COST – it’s free energy! There is no coefficient of performance. You can’t divide by zero. Solar Pool Heaters provide massive amounts of thermal heat energy with no operating costs. Clearly this is the most efficient way to heat a pool in Southwest Florida.

There are legitimate reasons to choose a heat pump, or even a gas heater to heat your pool in Southwest Florida. In fact, either option complements a solar pool heater perfectly if you have special requirements, yet still want to save energy/money. For example, if you require a constant year-round temperature, solar preheated pool water with a heat pump may be right for you. If you use your pool infrequently or on short notice, but demand an exceptionally high pool temperature, a solar pool heater supplemented by a gas heater will reduce gas bills tremendously.

There can be no argument about the most efficient pool heating source. Free is free. Solar pool heating is the most efficient way to heat your pool in Southwest Florida.

Fafco Solar can help you get the best Solar Pool Heating system in the business. If you insist on a heat pump, we can also help you get the most efficient heat pump possible from our friends at Done Right Pool Heaters, or
